Things Every Beginner Kiteboarder Needs To Know
Are Lessons Really necessary?
This will probably be the first thing on your mind. Are there lessons required to fly a kite or ride a board? Yes. Kiteboarding is much safer when you start lessons at the beginning. You also have a faster progression time which can literally be twice as long.
You can build confidence in your ability to hold your ground by taking lessons up to this level. You will feel confident that you can have a great time, despite being on the beach and looking at the perfect conditions. Kiting is about having fun with your friends. Lessons allow you to be safe on the water while learning tips and tricks that could save your life.
What is the learning process?
This is a common refrain: “I don’t do much, I have never been active. It doesn’t matter. Kiting is a difficult sport to learn. You can expect great results with the right instruction and equipment after only a few days of flying a kite. For those who are converting from other watersports, the average learning time for your first ride is between a few hours and a few days.
Once you have mastered the art of upwind riding, you will be well on your way to becoming a professional kiter. As always, practice is the key to achieving your goals.
What is the best time to go out on my own?
There is no right or wrong here so you’ll have to decide for yourself. You will feel more comfortable with your kite and more relaxed if you have taken lessons. We can only recommend that you get together with a few kite-flying buddies when you feel ready. If you get into trouble, you can call for help or get advice on how to fly.
Do a quick 5-second assessment of your kiting area. Pay attention to both upwind and downstream obstacles. Large houses/hills etc. Turbulences can cause wind gusts and updrafts that can be dangerous. You should have enough space to launch and land safely. Then, get out there and have some fun! Ask someone to help you identify hazards so that you are familiar with what to look out for when you venture out. This basic assessment can be learned with good instruction.
